DEFINITIONS

There are several ways of considering what biochar is or what it is not;

FROM THE CONTENT AND PROCESS POINT OF VIEW:

Biochar is an organic material produced by the thermal degradation of biomass; The most successful thermal degradation process used for this purpose is pyrolysis. Where pyrolysis is the thermal degradation of biomass in the absence of oxygen to  produce condensable vapors, gases, and char;

FROM THE STRUCTURAL AND POINT OF VIEW:

Plant tissues (dead or alive) contain relatively linear and weak aliphatic carbon chains. When these chains are put under certain conditions of temperature and pressure, their deformation occurs leading to more rounded and stronger chain structures like a ring in a finger. The arrangement of these chains (Rings) together form a block called the aromatic carbon structure.

The importance of the biochar, biochar production process and sustainability concepts have recently attracted the international community into a rethink towards a more holistic approach in biomass transformation and applications``
